Architectural Response to War evolved out of an understanding of the principles of Charles Pierce’s ten sign semiotic system. The film and companion book present the argument that the shelter is an inappropriate response to nuclear war.

The images are a mixture of archival footage of U.S. nuclear test detonations and video of a fallout shelter. Sound design by Andrew Creighton.

The bomb represents the end of everything. The shelter is impotent architecture that proposes a solution which does not address the symbolic nature of the bomb. It becomes the embodiment of the war with no solution.

The City Moving is a 16mm non-sync film. The audio track moves fluidly into and out of sync with the picture. This unique relationship brings focus to the different types of movement that surround us on the street and the rhythms and patterns witnessed in the motion of an individual and that of the group. An infinite number of moments experienced by an individual and felt throughout the city.

The footage was shot over seven weeks on 5th Avenue between 54th and 55th Street in Manhattan. Additional footage of the New York City skyline was captured at the Queens Museum of Art. Sound design by Andrew Creighton.

This is the first in a series of ongoing works that question the concept of the car in society.

Absence of Motion is a critique of the conceptual space of the automobile in our culture and the actual space that it occupies physically. The three channel video installation proposes an alternative point of view from which to view cars in our society.

The project is an investigation into the contradiction in our relationship to automobility, motion vs. stillness. By abstracting the automobile physically and removing the context of motion, we are able to question the beliefs that underlie car culture.

At the TED conference Frans Lanting presented photographs from his book LIFE that shows the story of life from the big bang to the present day.

A three channel video installation was produced to tell the story without words. Three projectors provide video coverage on all sides of a 5 foot tall rotating stretched fabric sculpture that acts as the screen.

The rotating screen creates unique relationships at the edges of the projected images as they blend together. Patrick Zimmerli composed the final 14m soundtrack.
